Being a mobile guy here at QuestionPro I’m usually in tune with what is happening in the mobile world, from app controversies to the next big thing; there’s always a good read somewhere. Over the last month I have been catching up on new contenders in the mobile field like Ubuntu and Sailfish but the big news as always is the approaching updates to the two giants, namely Android and iOS.
The announcements for iOS 9 and Android M were huge, the change list for each is miles long, the feature lists are impressive to say the least. Yes, I’m excited but at the same time a little cautious for the simple reason that every big release comes with its share of bugs, for example both Android Lollipop and iOS 8 had WiFi problems on launch which were not fixed till their .1 version increase (talk about copying from your competitors). On that note I have a list of 5 things to do and not to do for a good mobile upgrade experience:
- Do: Be excited for the upgrade.
- Don’t: Upgrade on the first day, instead wait a few days and see what problems others face.
- Do: Check if the upgraded OS has problems with apps and systems you depend on.
- Don’t: Assume (everyone knows what happens here) all apps will be fine with the upgrade. Android had a few problems with some games and the backup app that I use when Lollipop came out.
- Do: Double check your backups when you’re upgrading.
- Don’t: Not do a backup.
- Do: Charge your battery before you upgrade.
- Don’t: Upgrade when your phone says 10% charge left.
Finally and most important:
- Do: Be patient! These upgrades can take time and can look like they are stuck. It is very rare that these upgrades get stuck and can at times take an hour. (So plan ahead.)
- Don’t: Force the device to shutdown mid-upgrade process. Doing so could corrupt important parts of the device causing failure or significant damage.
Now that’s out of the way: enjoy your upgrade along with its features and enhancements. It’s always fun to have something new to play with 🙂
